Lift Safely!
Lifting heavy items is a leading cause of workplace injury. Use these smart lifting practices from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to stay safe while on assignment:
- Choose the correct approach for each load to be lifted. Sometimes it's appropriate to lift with the legs; other times the back should be used to lift.
- Use your "power zone" for lifting, keeping the object close to the body, between mid-thigh and mid-chest height.
- Use proper handholds to make lifting easier and reduce the risk of injury. Make handholds large enough to accommodate your hand size, so edges do not dig into fingers and palms.
- Pushing is generally preferable to pulling large loads, as it allows you to use large muscle groups and apply more force to the load (without risking strain or injury).
